Museu do Douro - Territory Museum

Regional Winner - Art and Culture - Porto

The great challenge for Douro is to implement a strategy based on four pillars: wine, landscape, culture and development.

As a renowned cultural and tourist structure, distinguished by the quality and implementation of diverse programmes which contribute to an increased knowledge and pride of the cultural identity of the Douro Region World Heritage. It has the prospects, in the future, to continue to have an active role in the socio-cultural development of the region, contributing to strengthening the cultural activities structures which support tourism activity, contributing to reinforce and publicise the regional products’ quality, in particular wine, through the appreciation of its cultural and historical component, contributing to a greater integration of the region into the international routes of wine tourism and cultural tourism, reinforcing its image as the first demarcated and regulated wine-growing region in the world and as a "cultural evolving and living landscape".

The Douro Museum’s duties of interpretation and communication go beyond the exhibitions, linking a variety of activities which appeal to other forms of artistic and cultural expression, and to other spaces for get-togethers, for cultural practices and for receiving people. Its calendar is regularly enriched, whether with projects developed in partnership with other institutions that encompass a range of marketing activities and tourist entertainment in Douro, or by being the promoter of cultural projects of artistic and creative interventions in urban spaces and historic centres.
