Five years ago, local entrepreneurs and music lovers Jose Pancorbo and Rafael Bezares weren’t sure if they wanted to create a special music festival or a special wine festival.  So they created both: MUWI La Rioja Music Fest, an annual event that fuses music, Rioja wine and tourism.  This unique focus earned the event a 2019 ‘Best Of Wine Tourism’ award for Art and Culture from the Great Wine Capitals Global Network.

Imagine having a hobby that is extremely enjoyable to yourself, as it should, but also brings great pleasure to everyone around you. Mark Lloyd from Coriole might think of the successful music and theatre he has been bringing to the rolling hills of McLaren Vale, as he - almost guiltily - mentions them to be more of a personal obsession and a digression to winemaking. But, if you win Great Wine Capitals ‘Best of Art and Culture’ two years in a row, I think it is time to call it more than just a runaway passion.

The ‘Best Of Wine Tourism’ People’s Choice Award is an offshoot of the ‘Best Of Wine Tourism’ awards.  The accolade, created in 2018, gives wine tourists from all over the world the opportunity to vote for their favorite wine tourism experience from among the latest winners of a prestigious ‘Best Of Wine Tourism’ award.

What are the ‘Best Of Wine Tourism’ awards?

Winner of the Great Wine Capitals Best Wine Tourism Award in the Wine Tourism Service category, EcoTours Portugal is a company that organises a series of experiences across various regions of Portugal.

This company runs some programmes to the Douro Valley that can last up to 3 days, enabling you to enjoy this region with many possibilities, including visits to wineries, historical monuments, Douro River cruise, wine tastings and a taste the delicious local cuisine.

I went on the one-day Douro Cruise experience, and got to see a few different sites in that region:

Vinos y Placeres: sharing the pleasure of Mendoza’s wine with the world

Taking the trophy for Wine Tourism Services at Mendoza’s Great Wine Capital Awards this year was a double celebration for the Vinos y Placeres TV show which was also celebrating its tenth anniversary

Saturday in Mainz means wine time. It's on the market, at the feet of the 1000-year-old cathedrale, where young and old meet. They chat, they eat, but above all, they indulge in the wines of Mainz, and they come in hundreds. 20 years ago, the "Marktfrühstück" – the market breakfast – was invented by a small group of winemakers from Mainz, today, it’s the hottest wine event of a whole region – beloved all around, and imitated by many a city in Germany.

Chateau Prieuré Lichine has a very long history of hospitality. As it's name implies, it is an old priory, built just behind the church of Cantenac, one of the five villages of the Margaux appellation.

There are not a lot of places in the world, let alone wineries, which are as inviting as Elderton in the Barossa. As soon as I walked in the door I just wanted to find a spot on one of the beautiful couches to curl up next to the fire with a glass of delicious Shiraz. I felt like I walked into the home of a favourite auntie and was about to experience the best bit of family time. I think I picked up the vibe of this location perfectly - family seems to be the magic word, and the Elderton Ashmead family makes sure you feel like part of theirs.
