The Graves

Originally planted on the very outskirts of Burdigala (Roman name for Bordeaux) in the first centuries of the Roman occupation, the vineyard region of Graves is the cradle of great Bordeaux wines. The wines of the Graves are unique in France in bearing the name of their soil : "Gravels of Bordeaux", as a reminder of the major role played by the soil in determining the quality of the wine.

Climate / Geography

The entire area has a temperate and mild climate resulting from the proximity of the ocean, which is favourable to the wine.

Protected from winds of the Atlantic by the vast Landes forest in the Gironde department, the vineyards of Graves stretch along a narrow band of land on the left bank of the Garonne river between Bordeaux to the north and Langon to the south.

Vineyards are primarily located on gravely terraces with a limestone sub-soil. The exceptional nature of the soil depends on the variety of the stones and pebbles.

Types of Wine / Grapes

Wines from the Graves region have always been famous for their great finesse and ageing potential.

The Red Graves are marked by the power and aromatic elegance of the Cabernet Sauvignon grape. The wines have a deep purple colour and a subtle bouquet of wood and fruit, and a long, well-structured taste.

The region’s dry white wines are brilliant and light in colour, and often have floral aromas. The vines are essentially Sémillon and Sauvignon Blanc.
