Constantia Wine Route - Cape Town, South Africa

Constantia is the birthplace of the wine industry in South Africa. As you drive through the beautiful historical valley it becomes clear why the first Governor of the Cape, Simon van der Stel, chose this situation for his farm, Groot Constantia.

The world-famous wines from Constantia were sought after by royalty in the eighteenth century, and still to this day, Constantia’s world-class wines win accolade upon accolade for their excellent quality.

The Constantia Wine Route is comparatively small and the emphasis is on the quality of its wines. It is only 20 minutes from Cape Town’s city centre.

Types of Wine/Grapes

Constantia has long been acknowledged to be the most perfect wine-growing area in South Africa. Due to prime conditions, superb red and white wines, and wonderful dessert wines such as fine Cap Classiques are produced

Climate/Geography

The vineyards are situated on gentle slopes not far from the sea, and the cool breezes blowing in off two oceans are an important influence. They provide ideal cool conditions, which slow down the ripening process of the grapes and create a unique wine-growing environment.

The land is also richly endowed with excellent soil, temperate sunshine and good rainfall.
