Florence is, without a doubt, one of the international capitals of tourism. Its image in the world places it high on the list of the attractions that exercise the most appeal on tourists worldwide. With about 5,700 local structures in the accommodation sector, between hotels and restaurants, and over 8,000 employees, the Tuscan capital is able to satisfy the most specific requisites for accommodation. Museums and Renaissance artefacts are not the only attraction for the 9 million visitors (only 2.7 million of whom are Italian) who choose this lovely province as the ideal place to spend a holiday. In addition to the “traditional” type of tourists, there has been a steady growth in interest in local foods and wines, which has generated an exponential increase in guest farm accommodations (with as many as 350,000 visitors).

The Florentine countryside is one of the favourite venues for those who want to combine a visit to the art city with excursions in the country and enjoy local foods and wines that are sure to satisfy the most demanding palates. A whole series of services revolve around the tourist trade – foreign universities, fair organizations, exhibitions, markets and conferences, entertainment, recreation – and these contribute to attract the higher quality of tourist to a vacation that can offer a valuable combination of amusement, relaxation and cultural activities.

Florence, with its 150 million €uro annual turnover and 300,000 guests, is also in third place in Italy among the "Conference cities". The sector is continuously expanding, bringing growth to all the surrounding activities: over 70% of the participants in fairs and conferences spend at least one night in a hotel, which adds up to a total of about 200 million euro, or 22% of the total income generated by the tourist trade. The same is true of the restaurants (although to a lesser extent) and commercial business, which is usually heavily patronized during events related to fashion and luxury goods. The fair and conference business generates employment for about 8,300 people including all the surrounding activities.
