Types of Wine/Grapes
Disputes pride of place with Chardonnay; the style
varies somewhat throughout the subregions, tending richer and somehow
slightly more rustic in east and west Gippsland, but in the South
Gippsland subregion Bass Phillip shows it is capable of making what many
regard as one of Australia's greatest Pinot Noir styles. Chardonnay is
successfully made in all subregions, with greatest success in East
Gippsland, where low yields produce wines of wholly exceptional flavour,
structure and overall impact, led by Nicholson river.
Climate/Geography
It is inevitable that the variation between the climate
of the thre subregions should vary. South Gippsland is the coolest and
wettest. West Gippsland centred on Maffra and the Latrobe Valley, is drier
and a little warmer that both South and East Gippsland. East Gippsland has
a more Mediterranean climate which corresponds quite closely to that of
the Yarra Valley.
