The Goulburn Valley Wine Region - Melbourne

The Goulburn Valley is a huge area stretching from Seymour in Central Victoria up to Echuca on the Murray River, its warm climate proving ideal for growing Rhone varietals. This big old region probably owes its very existence to the presence of the famous Tahbilk Winery on the banks of the Goulburn River at Nagambie. It is no surprise then that the land varies greatly across the region but in general expect to taste sturdy Cabernet and Shiraz and most of Australia's Marsanne.

Types of Wine/Grapes

This is big blooded red wine country. The old vines of Chateau Tahbilk take Shiraz to another dimension, but even its standard Shiraz is compellingly consistent in style, concentration and tannic strength. Also, this is the only place where marsanne is grown and made in commercial quantities. As with Shiraz there is a diverse range of Cabernet Sauvignon, produced by the Chateau Tahbilk and Mitchelton's.

Climate/Geography

This is a relatively warm region if judged by its centre around the towns of Seymour and Nagambie with a HDD of 1680, benefiting its status as a primary producer of full-bodied red wines. Nor is the rainfall generous: at 560mm.
