The Grampians Wine Region - Melbourne

The rugged, rocky peaks of the Grampians form the backdrop to one of Australia's most historical regions, the birthplace of Australia's sparkling wine industry in the 1860's. Today the Grampians wine region includes vineyards and wineries around the city of Ararat and the townships of Buangor, Great Western and Halls Gap. Other icons include the most important Aboriginal rock art in southern Australia and the Grampians National Park, one of Victoria's largest and most accessible parks. The bush is alive with native animals and brilliantly coloured birds. Its waterfalls and spring wildflowers are dazzling.

Types of Wine/Grapes

The region has a fine variety of shiraz, white or red. It makes wine of diverse but great style, ranging from silky smooth red cherry/plum wines to the chocolate and spice wines of Seppelt Great Western. Sparkling burgundy is produced from shiraz in the case of Seppelt Show wines. The region is also known for its other table wines, especially Chardonnay, Pinot Noit and Cabernet Sauvignon adding to the richness and diversity

Climate/Geography

Due to its location on the fringes of the Great Dividing Range, which in turn provides altitude, the Grampians region has a significantly cooler climate than those areas to its east. The region is especially well-suited to later-ripening varieties, most especially shiraz.
