The King Valley Wine Region - Melbourne

For a long time now this outstanding and diverse region has produced grapes that have lined the flavour profiles of many other district's wines - so good was the fruit. This is now changing and new wineries and vineyards are producing everything from austere sparklers to rich yet quite elegantly spoken reds, including ever-improving Italian varietals.

Types of Wine/Grapes

Chardonnay has now overtaken Riesling as the major white grape of the region, producing both table and sparkling wine. In both guises much is blended by numerous purchasers outside the valley. Cabernet Sauvignon, the most widely planted variety in the King Valley has its strongest foothold, as one would expect, in the low to intermediate elevations. Riesling was principally made as a dry style, but with some late-harvest wines made by Miranda, Brown Brothers and De Bortoli are all significant purchasers. Chardonnay and and pinot noir are also utilised by many of Australia's leading sparkling winemakers as blend components.

Climate/Geography

The climate changes progressively and significantly from north to south, from lower northern elevations to higher southern elevations, with a progressive increase in rainfall and decrease in heat summations. The climate here is ideal for the production of fine sparkling wine base.
