Types of Wine/Grapes
The region’s specialty is largely in sparkling wines,
and it boasts a surprisingly large number of high-profile boutique brands.
Most sparklings are made from the traditional chardonnay and pinot noir
partnering, and these are the grapes grown most extensively and
successfully in the region. Shiraz grown in the area has also earned a
well-deserved reputation.
Climate/Geography
The elevation of the Macedon ranges make this one of
Australia’s coldest wine-producing regions. It suffers from severe wind
chill, autumn frosts and hard volcanic soils. Winter dominant rainfall
means that summer irrigation is essential.
