Macedon Ranges Wine Region - Melbourne

Historically favoured as a cool summer haven for Melbournians the region is dominated by the 1000metre high Mount Macedon. The growth of the region’s wine industry was initially based on the gold rush of the 1850s, although it was subsequently devastated by phylloxera. A resurgance in the area during the 1970s – largely from small family concerns means that the area continues to grow. Its proximity to Melbourne and the beauty of the region also contribute to the region’s popularity.

Types of Wine/Grapes

The region’s specialty is largely in sparkling wines, and it boasts a surprisingly large number of high-profile boutique brands. Most sparklings are made from the traditional chardonnay and pinot noir partnering, and these are the grapes grown most extensively and successfully in the region. Shiraz grown in the area has also earned a well-deserved reputation.

Climate/Geography

The elevation of the Macedon ranges make this one of Australia’s coldest wine-producing regions. It suffers from severe wind chill, autumn frosts and hard volcanic soils. Winter dominant rainfall means that summer irrigation is essential.
