The Murray Darling and Swan Hill Wine Region - Melbourne

The Murray Darling and Swan Hill regions formally form part both the Big Rivers zone of new South Wales and the North West zone of Victoria. Together they encompass a vast area extending from Mildura in the west to Swan Hill in the east, and are jointly responsible for growing about 40 percent of the annual Australian crush.

Types of Wine/Grapes

By far the most important product of the region is chardonnay, acknowledging both the regional source and variety. Value for money is the key; the wines have a fruity softness and generosity which Australian consumers tend to take for granted, but export markets value highly. With the qualified exception of Colombard, most of the other table wines, white and red, are likely to end up in wine casks which hitherto been sold under generic names due to be phased out under the European Community Wine Agreement. Also most of the cheaper sherries and ports are produced from the Riverland.

Climate/Geography

Although distance between the eastern and western extremity is over a great distance, the climate is similar. Basically it is hot, with long sunshine hours, low humidity, and negligible growing season rainfall all contributing to make irrigation absolutely essential.
