Pedro Vivanco, the third generation of a family devoted to Rioja wine and founder of the Dinastía Vivanco Museum of Wine Culture, recently received Spain's 'medalla al Mérito en el Trabajo' (Medal of Merit for Work) for his many years of experience as a winemaker and director of several wineries, as well as a promoter of wine culture. The government of Spain noted in the awards ceremony that Mr. Vivanco "succeeded in positioning Rioja wines and everything surrounding them in a situation of privilege on an international scale".
One of Mr. Vivanco's greatest achievements was the creation of the Vivanco wine museum in Briones, the result of his and his family's patient accumulation of wine-related antiques. When asked what moved him to create the museum, Mr. Vivanco replied, "to give back to wine what wine has given to us".
The museum and its foundation, devoted to spreading wine culture and promoting education about and research into wine, have received several 'Best Of Wine Tourism' awards from the Great Wine Capitals Global Network, the most recent of which was in 2014 in the Art & Culture category.
