When you visit the vineyards of Bordeaux, sipping a delicious glass of wine and looking out across the vines, it is easy to fantasise about buying your own vineyard.  Perhaps friends will gently remind you of the old saying “If you want to make a small fortune in wine, start with a large one”.   However, there are many who have taken the leap from successful careers elsewhere to become successful Bordeaux wine makers, employing the same skills, drive and experience.  Here are some who also have a desire to share their new passion by welcoming guests to their properties

Dudley Brown and Irina Santiago-Brown are mid-life converts to winegrowing and winemaking. After leaving overseas careers in high tech and government to move to Australia they’ve since become fanatical wine industry participants.  

The Contest Painting the Harvest in Valparaíso Casablanca Valley is already a tradition. This instance perfectly combines art, wine, vintage and approach of vineyards to children.

Visitors to Rioja can find much more than wine inside the winery walls.  Two of the most outstanding examples are the Ontañón Winery and Museum and the Vivanco Museum of Wine Culture.

Ontañón’s motto is “Passion for vineyards, passion for wine and passion for art”.  To visit the winery and museum just outside Logroño is to immerse oneself in the Pérez Cuevas family’s collection of paintings and sculptures created by artist Miguel Ángel Sainz depicting the role of wine in Greek mythology.

If Malbec is Argentina’s national drink, tango is Argentina’s national art form. And, for lovers of both, there's no better experience to be had in Mendoza than enjoying the month-long Tango along the Wine Route (Tango por los Caminos del Vino) festival.

 

Chillon Castle has recently opened  a new venue – the Verrée Vaudoise –   for tasting the Clos de Chillon wine.
