Given that 95% of Napa Valley’s wineries are family owned and nearly 80% make less than 10,000 cases of wine per year, most wineries can be described as small, artisan producers. Get to know second generation vintner, Ryan Hill of Hill Family Estates and his perspetive on the family business.

He has a degree in computer science and management, but also in oenology, out of passion. He owned several companies linked to financial software and call centres, all of which were very successful. He was, therefore, a very successful businessman, originally from Aveiro, residing in Lisbon.

Starting a new career in wine after studying for an unrelated degree has proven valuable to two young members of the Rioja community:  Marta Ortiz-Arce Vizcarro and Alex Las Heras.

Born and raised in Westhofen, a small village in Rheinhessen, Katharina Wechsler made it to no less a place than the German capital Berlin. As a television editor, Katharina experienced the creative world of television at close quarters. At some point, however, her roots seemed to call for her, for she found her way back to the vineyards in which she had grown up and to the centuries-old family tradition of wine.
