On Thursday, 9th November, the closing ceremony of the Annual General Meeting of Great Wine Capitals took place at the Veramonte Winery in Casablanca. This event brought to a close the activities which took place over the course of last week in Valparaíso and Casablanca, with the participation of over 90 international delegates and well-known figures within the winegrowing and wine tourism industry. This has positioned Valparaíso Casablanca Valley as an important centre within the worldwide wine industry.

Wine students looking to broaden their global insights can register their interest to travel to our Great Wine Capitals regions as part of an exchange to study and gain invaluable cultural experiences, thanks to a new online internship portal.

The portal will match students and wine businesses with Great Wine Capital cities to study at an academic institution and/or gain experience at cellar doors, vineyards, wine marketing and many more areas in the wine industry.

On November 9th, Veramonte in Chile’s Casablanca Valley was the scene of the 2018 international ‘Best Of Wine Tourism’ awards ceremony sponsored by the Great Wine Capitals Global Network. The ceremony took place during the gala dinner that marked the end of the Network’s annual general meeting.

The 15th Best Of Wine Tourism Night revolved around awards given to the best wine tourism activities in the Bordeaux region in 2018.  

21 trophies were handed out, including 6 gold ones.  The ceremony took place on the 17th of October at the Bordeaux Gironde Chamber of Commerce and Industry.  The next challenge for the “Golden Best Of" award winners is to compete for a "super" International Best Of Wine Tourism award on the 9th of November in Valparaiso, Chile.

The Vintners Association of Casablanca Valley realized in  Casas del Bosque Vineyard the traditional event “Tintos de Clima Frío”, at which time the guests were able to taste the Premium line of the vines in the Valley.

Spain’s Royal Academy of Gastronomy recently announced its 2016 National Gastronomy Prizes for 2016.

Carlos Echapresto, co-owner and sommelier of the one Michelin-starred Venta Moncalvillo in La Rioja received the award for the best sommelier.  Echapresto is an internationally recognized wine specialist with a particularly deep knowledge of wines from the DOCa. Rioja.  The cellars house over 1300 different wines from all over the world.  The Academy emphasized Echapresto’s work as a tireless lecturer and promoter of Rioja wines.

Mainz Wine Market 2017 – a review

At this year’s wine market– the biggest wine event of Mainz at the end of August and beginning of September – the South Australian member of the Great Wine Capitals Global Network Adelaide was a special guest at the Great Wine Capital wine village in the city park. The city of Mainz was proud to welcome the oldest "family-owned winery" of Australia – the Yalumba Winery in Angaston represented by Heather Fraser. Next to the romantic rose garden of the city park visitors of the wine fair could taste all sorts of South Australian wines from Yalumba. As a highlight of each wine weekend a blind tasting took place on both Sundays including wines from Rhinehessen and the Yalumba Winery. Surprisingly most wines were guessed correctly which could not least be explained by the great interest of participants in South Australian wines in general and specifically in Yalumba wines. Especially one thing will be kept in mind: The interesting talks about essential features of Australian wines and in particular the differences between German and Australian wines.

Adelaide, South Australia was the international guest of honour at the recently Mainz Wine Market, an annual consumer wine festival held over two weekends in Mainz and attracting more than 400,000 guests.

With a symbolic ceremony in Viñamar, wineries and winegrowers of Casablanca together to the President of the Republic of Chile, Michelle Bachelet, celebrated the National Wine Day of Chile.
