Visitors can enjoy a journey on Douro's historical
steam train and combine it with a river cruise if they wish.
These tours include Portugal’s most beautiful region,
the port vineyards of the Douro Valley. This wide river valley was tamed
by a series of dams in the 1970’s enhancing the beauty of the area even
more. The only way to see the area at its best is by train and river
cruise. Tours may combine both forms of transport to give you an
unforgettable experience. The region is still served by narrow gauge
railways that cling to the sides of the mountains.
The "Tua Valley" line is the most spectacular
in Portugal as the train hugs the side of the rocky ravine and climbs for
over an hour and a half through a wild and unspoilt area of tiny isolated
villages.
The Douro Railway Line is a remarkable engineering
feat, completed in 1887, after twelve years, twenty-six tunnels and thirty
bridges.
Travelling in carriages from the beginning of the
century and hauled by either steam (Henschel loco 0187) or diesel (series
1 400) visitors can experience one of the most visible symbols of
the region whilst at the same time, delight in the majestic
landscapes of the Douro River Valley.
