Bordeaux

The Great Wine Capitals Global Network has just appointed their first ambassador in Bordeaux!

September 9, 2017

The tour through the vineyards and prestigious wine chateaux of Pauillac, Saint-Julien, Saint-Estèphe, Médoc and Haut-Médoc appellation, will start and finish in Pauillac.

This internationally known marathon is famous for the festive atmosphere that prevails there. Indeed, 90% of marathoners are disguised. The race is ponctuated by several events: musical breaks, wine tastings offered by the Châteaux (23 wine tastings along the race), oysters (at the 38th kilometer) or steaks (at the 39th kilometer).

To organize the event, 2800 volunteers are mobilized. The Médoc Marathon is organized by an association of volunteers since the beginning of the adventure.

Two Best Of Bordeaux Wine Tourism awards have justly compensated the dedication of the new team in bringing Château Soutard back to the elegance, deserving of its classified status. The first, in 2012, was for the architecture - hardly surprising given the beautiful gravity fed cellars created by architect Fabien Pédelaborde. As well as being an efficient working cellar it is a showcase for both the history of the property and the unique limestone terroir of the plateau of Saint Emilion on which the vineyard is situated.

Their latest award was for Wine Tourism Services, highlighting how they have put this newly renovated facility to excellent use, opening it up to visitors in so many ways.

Discover little gems of wine heritage, marvel at the architectural treasure, try out unusual accomodation or sample dishes from the Chef in the dining room of a Château.

If you’re familiar with the Great Wine Capitals blog you will know that a winery can win awards in several categories for their excellence in wine tourism. Château Agassac is one of these lucky properties as, since the beginning of these awards, they have won several of them – and this year is no exception with their recognition for Best Of Wine Tourism for their restaurant: La Table d’Agassac.

The current journey time of 3 hours 14 minutes to Paris by TGV will be reduced to 2 hours in July 2017. With 20 direct roundtrips per day , a train will depart for Paris hourly throughout the day, and every half hour at peak times, with trains leaving earlier and later in the day. Bordeaux St Jean station already receives more than 11 million passengers a year and is linked to the city centre in just 10 minutes via the tram.

The main programs that have been set up over the years will be described, among which the Best Of Wine Tourism contest, and their impact explained on the local wine and tourism industry.
By way of illustration, Napa Valley, Rioja and McLaren Vale wine regions will provide example of good practices in terms of building up a wine tourism destination.
