Cockburn's Port Cellars

The impressive Cockburn’s cellars are the largest in the old quarter of the city, holding 6,518 seasoned oak barrels full of maturing Port, plus the equivalent of a further 10,056 barrels in larger oak vats. This priceless stock is essential for the creation of great wines, especially the famous Special Reserve. Visitors will learn that even with modern technology, there will never be an alternative to the traditional slow ageing of fine Port in well-seasoned oak.

We’ve created a 3-day tour that explores the evolution of the world’s true Port, starting in the steep hillside vineyards of the Douro. On these historic quinta estates, harvests become complex fortified wines, brought down the river to age in the elegant lodges of Gaia. They’re especially magnificent enjoyed from here, overlooking the picturesque tile roofs of Porto.

It is in the Wine Cellar at The Yeatman, with 1,300 bottles of wine bearing witness, that we are welcomed by Beatriz Machado and the smile on her face. She tells us that when she was invited to join the Yeatman team, the CEO asked her if she knew all the Portuguese wines. She did not allow herself to become unnerved by the question, and promptly answered: “to know them all, I shall have to try them all”. And so she did. She tried them all and not only did she become the Yeatman’s Wine Director, as she also became the “Ambassador of Portuguese wines”.

There are never enough excuses to pay a visit to the enchanted Douro Valley, one of the most prominent wine regions in the world. Therefore I was very glad to accept the invitation of CoolTour Oporto, the regional winner of the “Wine Tourism Services” category of the Best of Wine Tourism 2018 awards, to go on a group guided tour to the Douro Valley.

Douro is Portugal's most famous and one of the oldest wine region in the world, and when it comes to wine tourism, it doesn't need much of an introduction. Summer is usually better for long stays but autumn and winter are the perfect seasons for a relaxing short break.

Cais da Villa Restaurant recently won the Best Wine Restaurant of Portugal award. It was presented by the Best Of Wine Tourism 2018 Awards, an event organized by the Great Wine Capitals Global Network.   I was very curious to discover the wonders that Chef Daniel Gomes and his team are producing.

The North of Portugal produces exceptional quality wines, worthy of a distinguished and diverse cuisine. If the wine from Porto is world famous, Vinho Verde and Douro DOC are the best kept secrets in the region. Have a taste of Douro muscatel and sparkling Távora-Varosa, as well.

Porto Calém Wine Cellars recently won the Best Innovative Wine Tourism Experience of Portugal award. It was presented by the Best Of Wine Tourism 2018 Awards, an event organized by the Great Wine Capitals Global Network. They were kind enough to fly me to Portugal in order to see the fancy new High Tech exhibition that has won them so many awards.
