Stellenbosch is South Africa’s premier and one of the country’s oldest wine producing regions. In international circles it is also regarded as one of the New World’s foremost wine regions due to the excellent qualities of its red and white wines. From cabernet sauvignon to merlot; pinotage to pinot noir; chenin blanc to chardonnay and sauvignon blanc to red Bordeaux blends, Stellenbosch has it all.

The region’s status is underscored by the fact that its wines garner some 70% of awards and accolades presented to South African wines annually in local and international competitions. And it is home to some of the world’s most famous New World brands, including Kanonkop, Vergelegen, Alto, Delheim and Neethlingshof.

Centred around the quaint historic student town of Stellenbosch, the Stellenbosch American Express® Wine Routes promotes tourism to the more than 130 wineries located in the region. Visitors are offered the best in wining and dining South Africa has to offer and can wind their way between both historic and modern wineries whilst taking in some of the most breathtaking wineland scenery in the world, including spectacular view of the Atlantic Ocean and sky-hugging mountain ranges.

Franschhoek Wine Touring Route

Download a Large Map
Franschhoek, the Gourmet Capital of South Africa, is one of the premier destinations in the World of Wine. Not surprising when one considers that this fertile ground is where the French first made wine in South Africa 300 years ago. Today, that noble tradition is carried forward by the members of the Vignerons de Franschhoek.

The Franschhoek valley lies to the southeast of Paarl and is enclosed on three sides by towering mountains: the Groot Drakenstein and Franschhoek mountains which meet at the top of the valley and the Klein Drakenstein and Simonsberg mountain, found further down towards Paarl. Streams from the higher peaks flow down to the valley floor where they converge to form the Berg River, fast-flowing in winter when snow caps the peaks and a mere stream in summer, fed by the Wemmershoek Dam.

Over forty wine farms, including some of South Africa's most respected names, who produce many of South Africa's top wines.

All the noble cultivars and classic styles are on show here. From superb whites such as Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Semillon, Viognier and Chenin Blanc to the rich reds of Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz, Pinot Noir, Pinotage, Rosé, and Merlot. Not to mention the valley's renowned Methode Cap Classique Sparkling wines, Ports, Grappa, Potstill Brandy, Aperitifs & Dessert Wines.
