Elderton Wines. The authenticity of Elderton Wines is what made them stand out to the judges and win the Wine Tourism Services category for Adelaide in the 2022 Best of Wine Tourism Awards. Situated in the old family home of the owners, the Ashmead family, the cellar door offers intimate and welcoming spaces in which to taste wine. The judges loved the strong sense of family connection throughout the space and remarked that it felt like “being welcomed into someone’s home”. The polished presentation and bespoke experiences make Elderton a benchmark for wine tourism across the world.

Sustainable Wine Tourism Practices
In a tightly contested category, the judges decided to award join winners in the Sustainable Wine Tourism Practices category for Adelaide in 2022 Best of Wine Tourism Awards. Banrock Station, a large corporate winery, and Gemtree Wines, a small family run operation, have achieved true excellence in sustainability. On Banrock Station, the judges noted “the work to preserve the Murray River Wetlands, and integrate them into the winery experience, is the result of over 20 years of effort”. On Gemtree Wines, they said the company is an “industry leader and constant innovate”, noting especially the addition of Aboriginal cultural experiences into their wine tourism offerings.

Innovative Wine Tourism
Chalk Hill Wines is the Innovative Wine Tourism Services winner for Adelaide in the 2022 Best of Wine Tourism Awards, with what the judges call “an envelope-pushing cellar door experience” continuing to impress. Co-located with food and gin offerings, they have developed a “Sensory Odyssey” experience which stimulates all five senses during the wine tasting. Notably, this experience can be re-created in the home and conducted over online meeting platforms, perfect for the strange new realities of a locked-down world.

Architecture and Landscape
Lake Breeze Wines. The Architecture and Landscape Winner for Adelaide in the 2022 Best of Wine Tourism Awards is an example of architecture which truly understands the environment in which it sits. The new Barrel Room at Lake Breeze Wines in Langhorne Creek is built with materials which reflect the unique terroir and history of the region, from locally sourced stone to the corrugated iron reflected the old dairy sheds. The judges loved the local links and quiet sophistication and noted “this is entirely consistent with every other facet of the Lake Breeze experience”.

A boutique luxury lodge in the beautiful Adelaide Hills, Simon Tolley Wines is the Accommodation Winner for Adelaide in the 2022 Best of Wine Tourism Awards. Badly impacted by the 2019-2020 bushfires, the judges described the lodge as a “phoenix rising from the ashes”. Simon Tolley Wines is uniquely Australian, providing a refined, yet rustic, luxury experience, and a first-hand look at how a small, quality-focused family business operates. “It is the personal touches that make the difference,” said the judges, describing it as a “truly immersive experience of the very best kind.
