Quinta do Vallado is a traditional tourism site with open doors since 1716 and is one of the largest and oldest estates in the Douro demarcated region. It belonged to the infamous Dona Antonia Adelaide Ferreira and remains until today in the possession of her descendants. More than a place of wine production that has successfully asserted itself since 1993, the Quinta has also become a hotel resort with the creation of the Wine Hotel in 2005. This year, Quinta do Vallado was distinguished with Best Services in Wine Tourism Services.
The wine hotel, winner of the award for best accommodation of the year 2020, is divided into two units, the Rural hotel, completed in 2012 and designed by architect Francisco Vieira de Campos, traditionally built-in schist, and the Traditional House, formerly home of the Dona Antonia, the famous Ferreirinha.
We will unravel the reasons behind this award and let you know a little more about this incredible property.
Quinta do Vallado won this year’s award for Wine Tourism Services given by Great Wine Capitals, which annually awards distinctions to the best and most prestigious destinations, services, architecture, art/culture, and wine-producing accommodations.
An in-depth experience focused on wine production
But after all, why did this estate win the award for best service? In conversation with João Roquette A. Ribeiro, Export Manager at Quinta do Vallado, we understood that the winery has numerous selections of services and activities from the most varied categories. “We try to offer an in-depth experience of the region, naturally focused on wine production. From visits to the vineyards, winery, and cellar, wine tasting, blending activities, vintage experiences, with grape treading in the traditional granite presses, through local and regional cuisine to the various outdoor activities”, he said.
As distinguished wine producers, the wine services are endless, on winter days you can enjoy the wonderful fireplace in the living room in the company of a good wine produced by Vallado. However, the wine tasting is the real star. The hotel has daily commented wine tastings that present the production process and facilities of the estate, ending with a tasting of some wines.
An unforgettable experience
The hotel has a panoramic swimming pool with a privileged view of the Corgo River, a tributary of the Douro River, an unforgettable experience. Quinta do Vallado has a range of varied wellness services, and a fully equipped SPA with a Turkish bath, sauna, and jacuzzi overlooking the wonderful orange grove.
Located in the Douro region, with minimal travel possibilities, Quinta do Vallado also has boat, bicycle, canoe, and trail services. The Jeep tour, through the wonderful views of the estate’s vineyards, is a lasting experience. “Knowing that the Douro region is the preferred destination for short-term holidays, we try to ensure that our guests have new experiences whenever they visit us, such as a new swimming pool in a very private place, on top of the river Corgo, or tours of the electric bike through the vineyards.” he added.
One of the best aspects of the Douro is the terraced vineyards that kiss the river, combined with the warm weather, which makes any sunset magical. With this in mind, Quinta do Vallado challenges guests to experience a picnic in the vicinity of the hotel, being able to experience a more private service with the tasting of local and national products and Quinta’s wines.
The estate also has more exclusive services for guests who want to have a private and unforgettable experience.
Sustainability is one of the great themes in wine tourism today and Quinta do Vallado focuses on the maximum importance of the theme, especially in the vineyards. “As wine producers, we know firsthand the importance of sustainability in vineyards. In this sense, seeking to respect the environmental balance, we have been developing a path towards more sustainable agriculture. Today about half of our vineyards (50ha) are already produced in organic mode.”, João added when asked about the topic, which has been increasingly addressed in conjunction with wine tourism, “naturally, this same ideology also passes to the tourism services, starting with the design of our hotel (built-in schist, the predominant stone in the Douro terroir)”, he added.
“It’s a great honor to receive an award for ‘Wine Tourism Services’ after the challenging year we’ve had. It is a great reward for our team, and we hope that our guests will feel more and more comfortable visiting us, knowing that they will find the highest level of service and safety”, concluded João.
These are the main reasons why Quinta do Vallado continues to be one of the most impactful names in wine tourism and wine production nationally. This is without any doubt an amazing place to enjoy the scenic landscapes of the Douro!
