The Penfolds name has long been synonymous with South Australia and the wine industry. With properties in both Magill (near Adelaide) and the Barossa Valley tourists have travelled throughout the state to experience one of the world’s most iconic wine brands. A recent redevelopment at the brand’s spiritual home, Penfolds Magill Estate has significantly raised the bar on delivering wine tourism experiences.
The Great Wine Capitals Global Network has honoured Penfolds Magill Estate as the 2018 regional winner of the ‘Best Of Wine Tourism’ Award in the Wine Tourism Services category and the 2018 International ‘Best Of Wine Tourism’ distinction.
Situated in the Adelaide foothills, just 8km from the CBD Penfolds Magill Estate is the site for the original home of founders Dr Christopher and Mary Penfold. This rare, urban, single-site vineyard features 12 acres of vines first planted in 1844, the 173 year old “Grange Cottage” (named for Mary’s English home), underground tunnels, a working winery, cellar door, dining and the vintage cellar. A long-term project to refresh this beacon for Australian wine was finalised in 2015, creating specifically designed spaces to allow visitors to engage, explore, discover, enjoy and experience the quality and meaning of the Penfolds brand.
There are three key features to this plan, each now housing various experiences to suit a myriad of tourists, their tastes - and visiting timelines.
Penfolds Magill Estate Cellar Door is the perfect fusion of historic stonework and contemporary styling. It’s a social tasting at the long, central bar, a viewing of a full collection of Penfolds Grange or an intimate, hosted tasting experience in one of their private nooks built into the original cellar.
Penfolds Magill Estate Restaurant offers an exceptionally luxurious dining experience. Here South Australia as a whole is celebrated. “It is the diversity of South Australia’s terroir that provides us with rich palette of regionally unique materials… Our aim is to constantly be inventive, drawing influences from season, flavour, aroma, wine and texture” says Head Chef Scott Huggins.
The final element offers the best of this food philosophy and the undeniably impressive full cellar collection of Penfolds wines in a more casual setting, is the new Penfolds Magill Estate Kitchen. Adjoining the Cellar Door it is the perfect spot to absorb breathtaking views across the vines to the Adelaide city skyline with coffee and pastries, a tasting plate, cheese flight or long, lingering lunch complete with a glass of Grange.
This new infrastructure has allowed Penfolds to increase the quality of special experiences like private tours (to walk into the depths of the vintage cellar is simply incredible!) tastings and events from 2 to 10 options in the last 2 years. This has culminated in awards such as 2016 SATIC Tourism Awards - Finalist Best Wineries and Distilleries, 2017 Restaurant and Catering Awards for Excellence - Restaurant of the Year, Maitre D of the Year and Best Fine Dining and the Best of Wine Tourism Awards 2018 for Wine Tourism Services. Fitting accolades for the wine brand named World’s Most Admired by Drinks International Magazine in 2016.
Penfolds Magill Estate has built a historical vineyard into a showpiece for South Australian tourism. The spaces and growing collection of walk-in and bespoke experiences on offer continue to grow awareness not only for the Penfolds brand, but for the region as a whole; a region they are very proud to be part of and will continue to work tirelessly for.
Experiences at Penfolds Magill Estate are available daily, other than Christmas Day and Boxing Day. Tours such as the Magill Estate Heritage Experience, The Ultimate Penfolds Experience and Twilight Tour and Luxury Degustation Dinner can be pre-booked online at www.penfolds.com
