The year 2020 will be forever remembered as the year we stopped shaking hands or hugging each other, as one of the most immediate effects of the terrible pandemic which has affected virtually every country in the world. Air transportation, which had put the whole world within reach, is at a standstill and traveling becomes a challenge again. Wine tourism, which had become in a few years one of the most dynamic sectors of the industry, is evidently also affected.

In these extraordinary circumstances, we can be particularly proud of the way in which our organization has reacted. Very quickly, the Network offered its members analyzes, thoughts, studies and solutions to adapt to the crisis.

Moreover, in the last 12 months, the Network kept going forward for its own sake and for the sake of its member cities and wine regions. Several events took place on-line: workshops, conferences, Midterm meeting, and our virtual AGM. Some of our members have also succeeded in organizing the Best Of Wine Tourism contest and have been very creative in the promotion of their winners.

Furthermore, important steps have been taken, among which:

– The excellent news of Cape Town’s return to our midst.

– Obtaining the status of observer member within the OIV, thus confirming the status of international organization that Great Wine Capitals has acquired over the years.

– Finally, and in line with the conclusions of our 20th anniversary conference and 2030 strategic plan, we have joined the Porto Protocol Foundation, an inspiring platform to exchange about solutions aimed at mitigating global warming.

The Great Wine Capitals Global Network is constantly evolving in order to inspire its members and partners and support the wine and wine tourism industry with viable solutions for the future, as it seems that we will never come back to yesterday’ world…

As a sustainable international organization, we will continue to progress and play our full and best part in what will be the world of tomorrow.
