Best Of Wine Tourism

Truth be told, the biggest asset of any region is not its produce or its landscape, it is its people. Those with a multi-generational connection to the land so deep it’s impossible to ignore, nor replicate. In the Eden Valley this is certainly true of founding families Henschke and Angas (of Hutton Vale Farm). Their heart-felt authenticity is contagious and with their new offering, the Ultimate Authentic Barossa Experience, are putting the region on the world stage.

Taking advantage of the holiday season, we decided to visit Ponte de Lima, to learn a little more about the Vinhos Verdes region, demarcated on 18 September 1908, which occupies the area known as Entre-Douro-e-Minho, the largest Portuguese demarcated region, in terms of surface area, and one of the largest in Europe. And there is no better place to learn about this region than the Centro de Interpretação e Promoção do Vinho Verde -CIPVV (Centre for Interpretation and Promotion of Vinho Verde).

This year CIPVV won the regional prize in the category of Art and Culture of the Best Of Wine Tourism awards from the Great Wine Capitals.

Santa Julia has several innovative wines under their belt (fancy a glass of Ekigaina or Arinarnoa anyone?) but what draws people into their fold are all the ‘extras’ on offer - an olive oil production factory, two restaurants, bike rides through the vines, cooking classes and an art gallery, all of which led it to win the Great Wine Capitals award for Best Arts and Culture in Mendoza last year.

Davis Estates is a family owned and operated estate located in Calistoga, Napa Valley. Passion, honesty and meticulous attention to detail in every aspect of life is the philosophy there. In 2011, the Davis family purchased the century-old estate winery and began their ambitious restoration project to create a distinguished winery. 

I needed a few days in a place where I could rest my ideas and recharge my batteries to their fullest, one of those times when I feel like being away from everything or as one of my family members would say, "who can discover us here." While searching for a place like that I came across with the wine tourism of Casa do Rio - Quinta do Vallado, which won the category of "Sustainable Wine Tourism Practices" in the Best of Wine Tourism Awards 2016 and more recently the Architecture and Landscape award at the Best of Wine Tourism Awards 2018. An offer so tempting, even more so, because it is connected to the world of wine, was the much-needed click.

Bodegas Lecea in San Asensio is one of many underground wine cellars that lie underneath most of the villages in the Rioja region.  Sadly most of these cellars have fallen into disrepair if not completely destroyed.  Luis and his family are leading a movement to restore these old cellars that show an important part of Rioja's winemaking past.  The winery was awarded a 2018 Best Of Wine Tourism award for Architecture from the Great Wine Capitals Global Network.

Masi recently won the Best of Wine Tourism 2017 award for accommodation, becoming part of the Great Wine Capitals Global Network, “for creating a journey linked to experiencing wine that highlights every facet of it and aims to satisfy the curiosity of the most demanding wine tourist… With the Masi Wine Experience, a journey through the various elements of wine tourism becomes an opportunity for knowledge, in-depth exploration and relaxation.” This is joined by the prestigious title of Winery of the Year 2018 from the Gambero Rosso guide.

Winter, and in particular the holiday season, has its own charms. The cold, and sometimes bad weather, beckons to be inside and warm, but it’s also a perfect opportunity to stroll, to enjoy excellent accommodations, to taste Portuguese cuisine and admire the beautiful landscapes. This is what led us to a weekend getaway, to visit Ponte de Lima, and to experience an excellent stay.

In the Domhof in Guntersblum in Rheinhessen they serve crisp Riesling and heavenly food among lots of historic tales on the side. In 2010 they won their first Best of Wine Tourism Award for that, now they topped it with the Best of Wine Tourism Award 2018 for accommodation. "There were just not enough beds for our guests", Chris says, thus, in 2016 they built on the site of the old bottle barn a small hotel which mimics the architecture of the neighbouring houses.

Glass has been essential to the preservation of wine over many centuries and continues to sustain the industry today. Thus it is quite fitting that last year’s Great Wine Capital’s ‘Best Of Wine Tourism’ Award winner in Sustainability in Mendoza was Verallia, one of the world’s largest glass bottle producers.
