Valérie Labrousse, Golden Best Of Wine Tourism 2015, Innovative wine tourism experience category, Bordeaux

Of course, receiving a Best Of Wine Tourism  is an award for several years of work aiming at creating innovative and welcoming visit concepts.

For small properties as Château du Payre, it is an opportunity to get promotion locally thanks to the several press releases circulated. A heartwarming highlight, especially as our estate is not situated  in a most touristic area.

2016 will be a great year, with the opening of the Cité du vin, the Bordeaux Wine Festival, and the European soccer championship in July,  all events creating a very festive atmosphere.

"This label allowed us to communicate widely on all our marketing tools. We then welcomed curious visitors who wanted to know more about us and try our services. On a regular base, this award catches demanding customers, looking for high quality experiences. The Best Of Wine Tourism label is definitely one of the best recognition to highlight tourism operators."

My very first visit to Bordeaux, in the early eighties, was to the Graves, more precisely to Pessac Léognan to the North of the appellation.

I was visiting from Paris for research for my thesis on Bordeaux wine marketing. The owner of Chateau Carbonnieux, Antony Perrin, along with Jean-Jacques de Bethmann of Chateau Olivier and Bernard Thomassin of Chateau de France each took the time to explain in detail, to a foreign student, the workings of the system of the Bordeaux market place ‘La Place de Bordeaux’.

June 4, 2016 to June 5, 2016

Organized by the “Union des Grands Crus de Bordeaux” *, the Week-end des Grands Crus de Bordeaux will start on Saturday 4, with Grands Crus tastings and prestigious diners in some of the most famous Bordeaux chateaux, while Sunday 5 will be devoted to wine tours and a golf tournament.

Over 100 wine producers and chateau owners will serve their latest vintage or older production under only one roof, allowing the participants to meet and discuss with some well-known people. Exclusive Grands Crus diners are programmed in the evening at Chateau Kirwan (Margaux), Chateau de Fargues (Sauternes), Chateau Branaire-Ducru (Saint Julien), and Domaine de Chevalier (Pessac-Leognan).

Different wine tours will be suggested for Sunday, touring around Médoc (Chateau Lynch-Bages, Chateau Marquis de Terme, Chateau Rauzan-Ségla),  and Graves & Sauternes (Chateau La Tour Martillac, Chateau Climens, Chateau de Rayne Vigneau).

Information and registration there: Week End Grands Crus

*The Union des Grands Crus de Bordeaux has been created 43 years ago to promote the image of Médoc and Sauternes wines that were classified in 1855. More than 130 chateaux are members of the association.

The Bordeaux Wine Festival will return in 2016, during 4 days, from the 23rd to the 26th of June. This event, which occurs every other year, gathers wine producers of the entire region, from different appellations such as Bordeaux, Cadillac, Saint-Emilion or Margaux.

The Festival will take place on the left bank of the Garonne, close to the beautiful Place de la Bourse, in three different thematic “villages”.

Thanks to a “Visitors pass”, tourists will be able to enjoy tasting workshops and taste wine in the different pavilions.
For passionate visitors, tours into some chateaux of Bordeaux are planned, with departures in buses from the city center.

Come and meet the Great Wine Capitals and embark for a wine tourism international tour: we will take you from the Garonne river to California, South Africa, Portugal, Chile, Spain, Germany, Argentina…

Commented tasting sessions will take place at the Palais de la Bourse every day  from 11 am to 12 and and from 3 pm to 4 pm.
Tickets soon to be bought on-line.

The party continues every evening, with concerts, fireworks, and the place de la Bourse will become a big sounds and light show for everyone.

Welcome to the comfort zone

As one of the Great Wine Capitals of the world, Bordeaux abounds with chateaux, many of which offer accommodation - from the merely sublime to the giddy heights of luxury.  To win a prestigious Best Of Wine Tourism award, The Domaine de Grange Neuve had to be special.  I took a trip to the Dordogne to find out why….

Next weekend, the owners of 39 Châteaux of the Pessac-Léognan Bordeaux wine appellation will open their doors to the public.

It is with pleasure and pride that they will welcome visitors and wine-lovers to  present their property’s story and their wines to the individuals and families that will come to attend the several activities organized for them over the two days.

All kind of amateurs are welcome on the Pessac-Léognan grounds for colorful encounters, and nine of the participating Châteaux will propose dinners/tastings on Saturday , December 5th; an excellent opportunity to visit some of the Bordeaux Best Of Wine Tourism awarded properties and enjoy a nice evening there:
