Sustainability in Wine Tourism

Braunewell is setting new sustainability standards – from its vines to its postage stamps. After all, the wine-making family focused on sustainability, efficiency and working conditions when planning the extensive renovation and expansion of its business from 2018 to 2021. For example, all lights are now LEDs and they collect rainwater for irrigation. The sustainable design of the company’s wine cellars and wine production process can be explored on exciting tours.

The winery covers an impressive 70% of its energy needs by generating its own electricity. Moreover, it will soon be certified as an energy-plus building. The family is committed to achieving ambitious sustainability goals in the future, as reflected by its “fair&green” certification. All of this and more impressed the jury – the Best of Wine Tourism Award 2022 for “Sustainability in Wine Tourism” goes to Weingut Braunewell.

In addition to the national award, Weingut Braunewell also won the International Best Of Award in the category “Sustainable Wine Tourism Practices”.

During the first ever “Great Wine Capitals Wine Walk”, the Best of Mainz guides will take visitors to three very different wine locations and tell interesting stories about the wine city. They will present guests and locals with new perspectives and allow them to discover some of the city’s hidden gems.

In addition, the Best of Mainz pop-up shop in the middle of Mainz’s old town (Kirschgarten) is a place where people can get information and advice before booking tours in the city and greater region. They can also buy a range of Mainz-related gifts and souvenirs there. Furthermore, their cooperation with wine bars and wineries in Mainz and the greater region is exemplary. As a result, the company is the winner of the Best of Wine Tourism Award 2022 for “Wine Tourism Services”.

Wine Gastronomy
Tacheles Landrestaurant / Gästehaus Schmitt, Flörsheim-Dalsheim

Diana Schmitt is the head chef and owner of “Tacheles”, a rustic restaurant in the old centre of Flörsheim-Dalsheim. Here, guests can enjoy culinary delicacies from the region. She serves game  from Schmitt’s own hunting grounds – and she also caters for vegetarians. Wines from the Demeter-certified winery run by her brother, Daniel Schmitt, round off her menu.

Equally impressive is the beautifully landscaped outdoor area of the restaurant. On top of that, they offer wine tasting sessions and wagon rides through the vineyards, where guests can stop off at the company’s very own inn. The jury honoured this coherent concept with the Best of Wine Tourism Award 2022 for “Wine Gastronomy”.

BottleStops is a tour operator and event company that offers highly individual experiences and builds bridges between visitors and local wine culture. The jury has chosen BottleStops as the winner of the Best of Wine Tourism Award 2022 for “Innovative Wine Tourism Experiences” thanks to its extraordinary tours and offers, especially for smaller wineries that cannot organise their own events.

BottleStops works with local winemakers to organise wine tasting sessions in unusual locations, as well as personalised events – live and online – and wine tours with a personal touch.

By offering wine tours in English and French, international visitors also have the opportunity to discover Rheinhessen’s wine.

After receiving its first award in this category in 2019, the jury firmly believes that GUT LEBEN am Morstein has developed into one of the most important culture and event locations in Rheinhessen. In 2020, owner Stefan Spieß took full advantage of the restrictions imposed by the coronavirus pandemic and established a new cultural concept that would put the local region on the map: the “Morstein Culture Festival”, a virtuoso combination of culture, wine and cuisine. Thus, GUT LEBEN is the winner of the Best of Wine Tourism Award 2022 for “Art and Culture”.

The estate in Westhofen has become a respected venue for high-class concerts, cabaret and readings throughout the year. Nationally and internationally renowned artists grace the stage. Naturally, a selection of regional wines accompanies the events.

Accommodation

Nestled in the idyllic vineyard surroundings of St. Johann, Hofgut Wißberg invites guests to take a break from their everyday lives in the “Tuscany of Rheinhessen”.

The hotel aims to promote regional products and strengthen the local economic infrastructure by combining stays with regional leisure activities: from vineyard picnics to wine hikes and various wine-related events.

Some of the hotel’s recurring themes are nature and regionality. That reflects in the new room designs, which transport guests into a modern-day fairy-tale forest. This concept impressed the jury – they have chosen Hofgut Wißberg as the winner of the Best of Wine Tourism Award 2022 in the “Accommodation” category.

And we have ourselves another double award winner: The unique building and gardens of GUT LEBEN am Morstein have become a venue for sophisticated gastronomy, hotel accommodation, events, conferences and cultural events.

The “vine arbour” and the restaurant’s “wine garden” are authentic settings for enjoying fine wines and culinary delights in the harmoniously restored vineyard castle from the 19th century and its renovated buildings. During the restoration work, the original layout of the buildings and paths on the property was kept as close to the original as possible. With all of this in mind, the jury has decided to recognise GUT LEBEN as a true beacon in the region by presenting it with its second award: the Best of Wine Tourism Award 2022 in the “Architecture, Parks and Gardens” category.
