International Best-Of Award for Mainz | Rheinhessen

28 October 2021, the Great Hall of the Electoral Palace in Mainz: The International Gala event is in full swing and the international Best Of Wine Tourism awards are about to be announced. All eyes turn to the stage as the host starts to call up the winners.
And the winner for Mainz | Rheinhessen is Braunewell winery!

They take home the award in the category “Sustainable Wine Tourism Practices”. Here’s why:

After an extensive renovation and expansion of their business, Braunewell winery is now setting new sustainability standards. During the renovation, their focus lay on sustainability, efficiency and working conditions. All lights are now LEDs and they collect rainwater for irrigation – to give just two examples. The sustainable design of the company’s wine cellars and wine production process can be explored on exciting tours. A “biodiversity hiking trail”, the family’s next big project, will round off this offer in the future.

The winery also covers an impressive 70% of its energy needs by generating its own electricity. On top of that, it will soon be certified as an energy-plus building. The family is committed to achieving ambitious sustainability goals in the future, as reflected by its “fair&green” certification. And they do so with conviction. Part of their philosophy is that the sustainable cultivation of vines, without any compromises, gives rise to wines of true greatness.

To win a national and a global award – on top of that in the same category – was naturally a surprise to the Braunewells. However, not an unwelcome one: “Receiving the award is amazing! We weren’t expecting it, especially considering the competition with so many other exciting projects”, says Stefan Braunewell.  “We are all the more pleased that we received the award in our core topic. This does not only validate our work but also helps us explain and advertise our mission.”
