In Porto and the renowned wine region of Douro Valley, tradition runs deep. But alongside centuries-old heritage, there is a vibrant new generation bringing innovation, energy, and fresh vision to Portuguese wine and winetourism. These young winemakers, entrepreneurs, and family successors are not only preserving the legacy of their forebears—they are redefining what it means to live and breathe wine in the 21st century.
From sustainability and regenerative viticulture to creative wine tourism and bold new labels, meet two great examples of the rising next-generation stewards leading the way.
Symington Family Estates – legacy reinvented with purpose
® Symington Family Estates
With over five generations rooted in the Douro, the Symingtons are one of the most emblematic wine families in Portugal. Today, the fifth generation is actively shaping the future of the business, embracing regenerative viticulture, climate adaptation, and social sustainability with long-term vision.
Symington Family Estates recently announced that five members of the fifth generation – Charlotte, Harry, Anthony, Vicky, and Teresa – are stepping into new leadership roles across the company’s Marketing, Sales, and Wine Tourism departments. Collectively, they bring years of hands-on experience in these fields and will now take on greater responsibility in shaping the company’s future.
They will continue to work closely with Rupert (Chairman and Joint Managing Director) and Charles (Head of Winemaking and Joint Managing Director), both from the fourth generation, as well as with their cousin Hugh, who is part of the family’s import and distribution team in the United States.
They’ve championed programs like the company’s ambitious sustainability roadmap, and a bold environmental restoration initiative. In wine tourism, the family has modernized experiences at estates like Quinta do Bomfim (home to their popular “Merenda na Vinha” picnics and vineyard walks) and the award-winning Cockburn’s Lodge in Vila Nova de Gaia, where heritage and immersive storytelling come together. Also a new project called Matriarca just opened in downtown Porto, worth the visit!
Other estates and cellars — including Graham’s, Dow’s, and Quinta do Vesúvio — are being guided into the future with a dynamic, hands-on approach. Whether through regenerative farming trials or their social impact initiatives in the Douro, the younger generations of the Symington family continue to lead by example, ensuring the legacy remains as relevant as ever.
This generational transition reflects the family’s long-term commitment to continuity, innovation, and sustainable leadership in both wine production and global wine tourism.
Niepoort – bold creativity meets heritage
® Niepoort
Six generations have shaped the remarkable journey of the Niepoort family, crafting their legacy in the world of wine since 1842. What unites them all is a shared passion for wine—one that honours tradition while embracing bold innovation whenever creativity dares to bloom.
At the helm today is Dirk Niepoort, a member of the fifth generation, who inherited from his father Rolf the challenge to “innovate while preserving the best traditions.” A naturally curious mind, Dirk is known for his ability to identify opportunities and act decisively, blending intuition with deep respect for craftsmanship.
Dirk Niepoort has been one of the most influential and unconventional voices in Portuguese wine over the past decades. But now, his children are gradually stepping into the limelight—continuing the family’s visionary spirit, but with their own imprint.
Now, the next chapter of the Niepoort story is already being written by Dirk’s children – Daniel, Marco, and Ana – who are working alongside him and following in his footsteps to ensure the family’s philosophy continues to evolve and inspire. Each wine that bears the Niepoort name reflects this unique blend of bold spirit and deep roots. From the vineyard to the bottle, they embody a profound respect for terroir, nature, and the skilled hands of those who bring each wine to life.
® Niepoort
With decades of accumulated knowledge passed down, the Niepoort family has long practiced intergenerational collaboration, ensuring a smooth transition of values and vision. Today, with the sixth generation stepping confidently into their roles, the future of Niepoort looks as generous and promising as a great harvest. The legacy continues—with energy, purpose, and a passion that never wanes.
The family’s approach has always been boundary-pushing, and with the new generation, we’re seeing a solidification of values: minimal intervention, terroir-driven wines, and increasingly creative wine tourism experiences—from vertical tastings in century-old cellars to gastronomic experiences in a traditional style, and wine pairings.
Niepoort’s dynamic projects reflect a cross-generational commitment to change, sustainability and experimentation.
