Castrum Wine Relais

Castrum Wine Relais, a jewel of 18th-century Italian classical architecture, which blends luxury hospitality, art and Valpolicella wine tourism.

In the heart of the Valpolicella Classica, Italy’s foremost wine region, on top of its central hill, immersed in the warmest sunlight and protected by Chiesa di Sant’Ulderico, stands one of the oldest houses in Castelrotto ( VR ). It has recently come back to life with the opening of the Castrum Wine Relais (2025 Local winner Best Of Wine Tourism Award  – category “Culinary experiences”) particular house, awarded in 2024 per a jewel of 18th-century Italian classical architecture, has the unique feature of overlooking the entire area. From every point of the panoramic terrace, one can admire, in a single view, the multicolored vineyards of Valpolicella, the Adige River that surrounds the hidden Verona, and the inspiring heights of Lessinia.

The property has been in the hands of the family of the current owners, the Borghetti family, ever since Vito Fraccaroli, father of the famous sculptor Innocenzo Fraccaroli, built it in the late 1700s. It is located in the central square of the village, right next to the medieval castle of Castelrotto, and – in contrast to the castle – has stood the test of time, evolving and becoming more beautiful and iconic for the local community, with each generation of this family adding yet another extension.

Heritage – The house of Fraccaroli

Fraccaroli family was the first to settle here and to build the main house in the late 17th century. The property still carries their name to this day as a sign of respect for its descendants and their connection to one of Italy’s renowned artists—the sculptor Innocenzo Fraccaroli, also known as “the Canova of Verona.”

Awarded the grand prize by the Brera Academy in Milan for his early works, Fraccaroli is celebrated worldwide for his depictions of characters from Greek mythology. He was a constant presence at major art fairs and exhibitions of his time. From Rome to Paris to Vienna, he traveled the world exhibiting his art – an opportunity that led him to commission works for elite members of society, including the Rothschilds.

Today, Castrum Wine Relais draws upon his legacy, proudly incorporating the symbols and works of  Innocenzo Fraccaroli into its branding and communications, with the aim of carrying his legacy alive.

From Art to Wine: a family journey

The Borghetti family, direct descendants of the Fraccarolis, have expanded the mansion’s legacy into a different domain—the winemaking industry. In the late 1970s, Paolo Borghetti began producing his own wines from the unique vineyards of Valpolicella Classica that his family owned in the region. Using traditional methods combined with his personal touch, he also created the first two family labels: LE 4 VIGNE and I TRE SANTI.
