Three Centuries of Craft: Weingut Manz Celebrates 300 Years of Winemaking in Rheinhessen

In the heart of Rheinhessen’s rolling vineyard landscape lies Weingut Manz, a family-run winery with roots that reach back to 1725. For eight generations, the Manz family has cultivated vines in and around the village of Weinolsheim, crafting wines that reflect not only the terroir but also the deep care and continuity that define this place.

Today, the winery is led by Erik and Eric Manz, a father-and-son duo who have built on tradition while embracing innovation. Their approach to winemaking is grounded in respect for the land and guided by an eye for quality. With around 25 hectares of vineyards under their care, including parcels in renowned sites such as Herrenberg, Sackträger, Kehr and Hipping, the Manz family cultivates a wide range of grape varieties across soils of loess, marl, limestone and clay.

Riesling plays a central role in the winery’s portfolio and is considered one of its true strengths. The estate produces a remarkable range of Rieslings, from fresh, mineral-driven wines ideal for everyday enjoyment to complex, single-vineyard expressions with depth, structure and aging potential. These wines reflect the varied terroirs of Rheinhessen and showcase the versatility of the variety, offering styles that range from dry and vibrant to finely balanced with a touch of residual sweetness.

While the wine speaks for itself, it’s the architectural presence of the winery that immediately captures attention. The newly designed vinothek makes a bold statement in the landscape with its sharply inclined façade angled at 67 degrees. This angular, slate-gray building is a deliberate contrast to the surrounding vineyard slopes and village rooftops. Inside, the space opens up to warm materials like wood and stone, with subtle accents in black and gold. The tasting room is bathed in natural light and framed by expansive windows that draw the outside in. The design balances clarity with comfort, inviting guests to linger and explore.

Visitors to Weingut Manz don’t simply come for the wine; they come for the experience. The vinothek offers a space where conversation and craftsmanship meet. Whether enjoying a relaxed tasting or attending a curated wine and dine event, guests are immersed in the world of Manz. Past dinners have paired fine wines with multi-course menus created by renowned chefs, transforming the cellar into a setting for culinary discovery.

The wines are structured through a clear quality pyramid, beginning with estate wines that highlight the varietal character of Rheinhessen’s grapes. These are followed by terroir wines that express the influence of specific soil types, and at the top, single-vineyard site wines that represent the pinnacle of precision and personality. White wines are typically fermented at cool temperatures in stainless steel to preserve freshness and clarity, while red wines are matured in traditional wooden barrels or barrique for added depth and structure. The winery also produces small volumes of sparkling wine and noble-sweet specialties in select vintages.

The spirit of Weingut Manz is one of confident evolution. It is a place where history is honoured but never allowed to stand still. Through its wines, architecture and guest experiences, it offers a clear and compelling vision of what modern Rheinhessen can be: rooted, refined and ready to welcome.
