From City Life to Vineyard Terraces: Lausanne and Lavaux, a Seamless Wine Experience

Few wine destinations combine city life and vineyard landscapes as effortlessly as Lausanne and Lavaux. Explore a region where culture, wine and breathtaking scenery are never more than a few minutes apart.

Lausanne and Lavaux demonstrate how closely a city, its wines and the surrounding landscape can be connected. Within just a few kilometres, visitors can travel from a vibrant urban centre to one of Europe’s most renowned wine regions. This proximity is what makes the destination so unique and rewarding to explore.

Culture and Lifestyle by the Lake

The journey begins in Lausanne. Set on the shores of Lake Geneva, the city combines culture, gastronomy and quality of life. At Plateforme 10, Lausanne’s new arts district, three leading museums create a dynamic cultural hub and reinforce the city’s reputation as a centre for creativity and innovation. At the same time, the wine region is never far away – present in restaurants, wine bars and lakeside terraces overlooking the water.

A World-Class Wine Landscape

Just a few minutes from the city, the scenery changes dramatically. The vineyard terraces of Lavaux stretch for nearly 20 kilometres along the shores of Lake Geneva and have been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2007. Steep slopes, historic villages and narrow paths define a cultural landscape that has been shaped by viticulture for centuries.

One of the best ways to experience this landscape is on foot. A well-developed network of wine trails connects villages such as Lutry, Epesses, Rivaz and Saint-Saphorin. Along the way, visitors are rewarded with ever-changing views of the lake and the Alps. The paths lead through the vineyards and directly into the daily life of the region.

For those wishing to learn more about Lavaux’s wine culture, the Lavaux Vinorama in Rivaz is an ideal starting point. This information and tasting centre offers a comprehensive introduction to the region’s wines and appellations. Visitors can discover the diversity of Lavaux in one place and deepen their understanding of the landscape they are exploring.

Exploring the Wine Region by Boat

Getting there is part of the experience. Many visitors combine their vineyard discovery with a cruise on Lake Geneva. Historic Belle Époque paddle steamers connect Lausanne with the wine villages along the shore, offering a unique perspective on the terraced vineyards from the water.

One Destination, Many Perspectives

What sets Lausanne and Lavaux apart is the diversity they offer within a compact area. Contemporary culture, historic wine-growing villages, spectacular scenery and regional gastronomy come together to create a coherent and memorable visitor experience. On the same day, travellers can visit a museum, hike through the vineyards, discover local wines and spend the evening by the lake.

The region is built around a clear identity: wine is not merely an agricultural product, but an integral part of the local culture and way of life. Lausanne and Lavaux invite visitors to experience this identity first-hand through encounters, landscapes and activities that go far beyond a traditional wine tasting.
