Above the Vines: A Luxury Awakening at Delaire Graff Estate

There’s a moment turning onto the Helshoogte Pass from Stellenbosch when the light shifts and the road begins to climb. As the slopes unfurl into lush valleys and dramatic mountain backdrops, the entrance to Delaire Graff Estate appears like a secret revealed. It is here, at this meeting point between cultivated beauty and wild South African terrain, that one of the Cape Winelands’ most luxurious and artful destinations waits to be discovered.

Set on the crest of the pass, with panoramic views across the Banghoek Valley and Simonsberg Mountain, Delaire Graff Estate is more than a winery. It’s the embodiment of a vision first imagined by Laurence Graff, Chairman of Graff Diamonds International, who acquired the estate in 2003. His ambition? To create a place where world-class wines, fine art, refined hospitality, and natural beauty would converge into something extraordinary. Since opening in 2009, that ambition has come alive in ways that continue to impress even the most seasoned of wine travellers.

The estate’s approach to wine is rooted in precision and passion. With 17 hectares of vineyards planted on steep, sun-drenched slopes, the wines here benefit from altitude and expert craftsmanship. Visitors can enjoy these vintages in the Wine Lounge, where tastings are paired with vistas that stretch endlessly across the Winelands. Whether it’s the estate’s flagship Cabernet Sauvignon or the refreshing Coastal Cuvée Sauvignon Blanc, the experience is immersive, an encounter with both terroir and technique.

But wine is just one part of the story. Delaire Graff has built a reputation for culinary excellence, offering a trio of dining experiences that cater to diverse tastes. At the Delaire Graff Restaurant, a South African bistro-style menu takes full advantage of local produce and seasonal creativity. The dining room opens onto a terrace overlooking vineyards and olive groves, ensuring every plate is served with a side of awe. For something more intimate and unexpected, HŌSEKI, meaning “jewel” in Japanese, delivers contemporary Japanese fare under the guidance of Executive Chef Virgil Kahn. And at Lorenzo’s, diners can enjoy refined Italian dishes in a garden setting blooming with vibrant colour.

Accommodation at the estate is equally curated. The lodges, designed with understated elegance and panoramic glazing, offer total privacy and indulgence. Each comes with a private heated pool, a butler, and the kind of silence that only deep nature can provide. For larger groups or families, the Owner’s Villa, spanning 660 square metres, is a secluded haven with every amenity imaginable, including personal chef services and a dedicated team to tailor your stay.

No visit would be complete without time spent at the Delaire Graff Spa, where wellness becomes ritual. With treatments inspired by the restorative qualities of nature and performed using premium products, it’s a place to decompress fully. The spa journeys are particularly noteworthy, immersive experiences that combine massage therapies, holistic rituals, and a gourmet lunch at HŌSEKI, designed to harmonise body and mind.

Art and design are deeply woven into the Delaire Graff identity. Over 400 works make up the estate’s collection, including sculptures and paintings from renowned African and international artists. Vladimir Tretchikoff’s famous “Chinese Girl” is among the highlights, on permanent display. Outside, the gardens, thoughtfully landscaped to ensure year-round blooms, are alive with indigenous flora, sculpture, and water features that connect seamlessly with the surrounding terrain.

For Damien Joubert-Winn, Head of Marketing at Delaire Graff, wine tourism is more than a sector, it’s a symphony of experiences. “Wine tourism is the heart of what we do,” he says. “It’s about crafting moments that linger well beyond the last sip or sunset. Here, every guest becomes part of our story, one shaped by passion, artistry and the enduring allure of place.”

Delaire Graff Estate stands as a benchmark, not only for what a wine destination can offer but for how it can feel: elevated, thoughtful, and unforgettable.
