Founded in 1979 by Mark Maxwell, Maxwell Wines began from a simple but resolute belief in estate-grown quality. Against conventional wisdom at the time, Mark chose to purchase and revive a neglected vineyard on Olivers Road, laying the foundation for what would become one of South Australia’s most distinctive family-owned wineries.
Today, the estate’s 100-acre vineyards sit on ancient limestone soils that lend character and structure to a diverse portfolio. From robust Shiraz and Grenache from historic plantings dating back to the early 20th century, to elegant Mediterranean varieties and vibrant whites, each wine showcases the unique terroir of McLaren Vale with balance and finesse.
Beyond wines, Maxwell is also internationally recognised for its mead, a honey-based wine whose ancient craft the Maxwell family helped pioneer in Australia.
“What drives me has always been continuity, capturing the spirit of these unique vineyards each year,” Maxwell reflects. “From the earliest days, I wanted every vintage to tell a story of place and passion.”
The winery itself is architecturally striking: partially hewn into a limestone hill, the cellar door sits above working fermenters, offering guests a rare window into the inner workings of the estate while framing sweeping vineyard views.
Visitors can explore Maxwell’s world through guided cellar door tastings where knowledgeable hosts lead curated flights of wines and meads, often paired with imaginative bites designed to complement each pour. Seasonal experiences, from heritage tours to vineyard picnics and elevated dining events, extend the estate’s hospitality well beyond a traditional tasting.

Central to Maxwell’s appeal is its acclaimed on-site restaurant, now firmly established as one of South Australia’s standout dining destinations. The culinary offering is ambitious yet grounded, with menus shaped by seasonality, local producers and a deep understanding of the estate’s wines.*
Under the direction of Head Chef Matt Rodgers, the kitchen reflects both technical precision and a strong sense of place. Bringing experience from leading international kitchens, Rodgers crafts dishes that are refined without being restrained, designed to enhance and echo the wines in the glass. “For me, the best plates are those that speak of this place, its produce, its seasons and its wines,” says Matt. “We want every guest to feel that the food and wine are in true conversation on the palate.”
The restaurant’s degustation menu showcases South Australia’s produce at its peak, from delicately prepared seafood to richly flavoured meats and thoughtfully constructed desserts – each course aligned with Maxwell’s estate wines. The wine tasting experience is further elevated by Maxwell’s new snack menu, where bite-sized dishes of genuine fine-dining quality invite guests to explore unexpected flavour combinations alongside their wines. Each snack is carefully composed and beautifully presented — more akin to a fine dining plate than a traditional cellar door accompaniment. Combined with the newly developed Terrace space, the offering creates a relaxed yet refined setting where guests can savour exceptional food while enjoying Maxwell’s wines.

Maxwell Wines represents the evolution of Australian wine tourism, a destination where vineyard, winery and restaurant operate in harmony. With more than four decades of family stewardship, a reputation for both powerful reds and pioneering mead, and a dining experience that rivals some of Australia’s best restaurants, the estate offers far more than a tasting. It offers a complete immersion into McLaren Vale’s landscape, history and flavour, all guided by a clear philosophy: that wine and food, when crafted with integrity and imagination, can tell the story of a place better than words alone.
