Pieropan: Innovative and Sustainable Underground Winery

Pieropan, the iconic wine producer from the Veneto region in Italy, has always been a custodian of the territory, respecting and preserving the landscape and the vineyards. And now, they have yet another accolade to add to their already glittering list of accomplishments - the Global Best Of Wine Tourism's Architecture & Landscape category Award.

The family-owned winery’s commitment to sustainability is evident in its underground winery. They chose an underground structure to harmonize the winery with the surrounding territory, respecting and enhancing the landscape. The materials used in the construction were carefully selected, keeping in mind their durability and ability to withstand the test of time. The facade is made of natural stone from Vicenza, and Euganean trachyte, while brass has been used in other parts of the structure. Using these materials helps the building blend in with the environment and creates an organic connection with the vineyards.

Apart from the use of natural materials, the winery has also incorporated a rainwater collection system on the rooftop, which helps save water and allows for the reuse of the collected rainwater. The underground environment is also highly energy-efficient, thanks to its climatic stability, ensuring stability in both thermal and humidity levels. This focus on energy efficiency aligns with Pieropan’s commitment to sustainable practices.

Pieropan is known for its focus on Soave Classico DOC, Valpolicella Superiore DOC, and Amarone della Valpolicella DOCG. They use local varieties and denominations, which helps express the terroir. Calvarino, one of their wines, was the first single vineyard Italian white, which speaks to their commitment to quality.

To maintain its “Best Of” status, Pieropan plans to improve its sustainability commitment with Equalitas certification. They will also open a hospitality retreat in Valpolicella, where they have restored an ancient Veneto villa. In this retreat, they plan to organize new tourism experiences for their guests.

What makes Pieropan unique is the sense of family that permeates everything they do. The owners and employees are of the same age and share a passion for making Pieropan the best it can be. The “Leonildo Pieropan” wine cellar is a perfect example of the family’s commitment to quality and sustainability, and their winemaking legacy is one that they will continue for generations to come.

Pieropan’s Palazzo Pullici in the center of Soave is not only the family’s residence for over two centuries but also the company’s headquarters. The building dates to the 15th century and was renovated at the end of the 80s and has now become the vital center of the winery’s activities.

The winery’s commitment to sustainability is not just a trend but a way of life; this focus on preserving the landscape and the vineyards makes Pieropan a winner. The family’s love for the land and the value of tradition is tenaciously preserved and handed down to the new generations, making Pieropan an icon in the wine industry.
