We always appreciate the opportunity to share Rheinhessen’s unique wine culture with the readers of this blog. In past articles, we have explored Rheinhessen’s sub-regions, its cordial wine culture, amazing activities around the vineyards and exclusive wedding locations. Today it is time to relax and enjoy life at Rheinhessen’s premier wineries. They all have something in common: Magnificent views that let you appreciate the serenity of the surrounding nature. In this little article, we take the long view and enjoy the panoramic views from Rheinhessen’s most scenic wineries.
Manz winery
The Manz winery in Weinoldsheim is a perfect marriage between style, taste and great views. The winery is majestically situated in the hills above the village and blends seamlessly into the surrounding vineyards. The main building has a facade tilted by 67 degrees, just like the steep slope of a vineyard.
It is very modern and beautiful, effortlessly combining dark concrete and lighter stone from local quarries. Besides, the Manz winery features an impressive interior design. The interior continues the theme with dark wood and gold applications. The highlight of the Manz winery, however, is the unrestricted view of the surrounding hills of Rheinhessen and the fantastic sunsets.
Keth winery
Deeply rooted in Rheinhessen and its culture and traditions, Keth is committed to producing high quality and all-organic wines. The Keth winery is one of the big players in the Rheinhessen wine business. The winery manages 80 hectares of vineyard spread all over Rheinhessen and produces some of the best wines out there. Among the most important varieties are the Pinot Blanc, Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay, while the rare St. Laurant represents the red variety. After years of growth and expansion, the old winery could no longer handle the business.
In 2023, the Keth family moved to a new facility just outside the village of Offstein. The new building measures an impressive 5.000 square meters. It combines cutting-edge technology, futuristic design and sparkling architectural style. The so-called Weinarkaden are a combination of a high-end wine bar, a trendy lounge and a winery. One of its distinguishing features is the location in the middle of the Rheinhessen vineyards. The view is just fantastic.
Thorle winery
Another all-Rheinhessian success story is the Thoerle winery in Saulheim. The family winery has a long history dating back to the 17th century. Until the 1980s the family was running a diversified farm with cattle breeding and several crops besides vines. It was in the year of 1985 when Rudolf and Uta Thoerle made the brave decision to focus exclusively on high-quality wines. Their sons Johannes and Christoph joined them in the next years and are running the winery today.
Domestically Thoerle is famous for their high-quality Rieslings, yet internationally it’s the red wines that get all the attention. In 2011, the German Wine Institute organized a wine tasting in London featuring Thoerle wines. In this “Judgement of London” category of Pinot Noir, the Thoerle wine won against contesters from North America, South Africa and Australia, reaching the second place in this category.
The Thoerle winery is another stellar example of innovation and pioneer spirit from Rheinhessen. Focussing unapologetically on quality and innovation, the Thoerle family has brought international fame to Rheinhessen and its vineyards. But there is more to the Thoerle winery than great grape juice. The winery is situatated in the beautiful hills over Saulheim and has magnificent views to offer.
