Smart cities – on the way to the future

More and more cities are taking on the challenge to become a “smart city” - learn about what Mainz is doing here.

More and more cities are taking on the challenge to become a “smart city” – among them are also the communities in Rheinhessen. Mainz, the biggest of them, has made it one of their central projects for both present and future. Let us introduce you to it.

Mainz was the starting point for the world’s first major media revolution: Gutenberg and the printing press. To build on this history, the city of Mainz makes digitization a joint project of the city, companies, business, science and the people who live here: mainzDigital.

The path to a successful digital transformation, the so-called “Mainzer Weg” (literally: Mainz way), has emerged from a large-scale project. It comprises five fields of action with respective sub goals and smaller projects:

  • Intelligent infrastructure
  • Digital administration
  • Mobility, environment and urban development
  • Economy, innovation and cooperation
  • Education and life together

The basis of this digitization strategy is a comprehensive, intelligent infrastructure – including the city administration and municipal companies. mainzDigital can build on previous successful developments such as broadband coverage, an IoT Air-quality network or an established digital hub to name just a few. So what will happen next?

To further an intelligent infrastructure the digital infrastructure will expand, data will be linked in a targeted and secure manner and internal administrative structures will expand. The promotion of the digitization of the city centre and the strengthening of clusters and initiatives will keep Mainz an attractive location for business. Mainz will also profit from the promotion of intelligent mobility as well as the usage of traffic or environmental data.

The citizens will also benefit directly: both young and old can participate digitally thanks to the promotion of digital skills and communication. With the implementation of a digital administration their everyday-lives will also become easier. The inhabitants of Mainz can already carry out many requests online, for example requesting a birth certificate. This service will increase further. The backbone for this is an administration that is transformed into the workplace of the future.
