The Douro Museum – a Territory Museum is the perfect gateway to discover the Douro Demarcated Region, declared a World Heritage by UNESCO as a evolving and living cultural landscape. In a multisensory approach, it creates connections throughout its territory reaching communities and projecting Douro's heritage well beyond its borders. Its creativeness and networking earned it the regional distinction of Best of Wine Tourism 2017 in the Art and Culture category.

After a first edition that matched the highest of expectations and a second one that confirmed all of Love Tiles Douro Granfondo’ potential, in 2017 the biggest cycling for all event in Portugal will go down two tracks, the one of growth and the one of internationalization, gathered under a common denominator, Friendship.

Friendship is Love Tiles Douro Granfondo theme for 2017, one of the most noble and beautiful feelings there are and that we strongly encourage towards all those who give their contribution for the success of this and other Bikeservice’s events, especially those who pedal for pleasure but also sponsors, mayors and other authorities as well as our contributors.

In 2015, we had over two thousand registrations, which immediately set a new participation record in cycling for all events in Portugal; a year later, in 2016, with the unforgettable presence of Italian cycling great Francesco Moser, we reached three thousand, clear evidence of Love Tiles Douro Granfondo’s growth potential. For 2017, the bar is raised up to 4000 cyclists and a foreign participation of around five hundred, for we also aim to show the wonders of Douro to a larger number of athletes from other countries.

In 2017, Love Tiles Douro Granfondo will have all things the previous did have – stunning landscapes, three different and challenging courses suitable for everybody, emotion, parallel activities, gifts and surprises -, besides the commitment we put in every event we set up.

All this and, of course, a lot of Friendship!

Coming from Vila Real and descending the terraced mountain by the beautiful national road that configures amazing viewpoints at each curve of the journey, a black silhouette appears on my left. There is something subtle in the way that Quinta da Gaivosa’s new winery marks the landscape of the Alto Douro wine region.

Startling, it tells a story made of dreams and achievements, fusing into the landscape that embraces it, that of the first demarcated wine region of the world, classified as World Heritage by UNESCO.

These are more than enough reasons for Quinta da Gaivosa to be the winner of the Great Wine Capitals 2017 Best of Wine Tourism regional award in the Architecture and Landscape category.

The twentieth edition of the “Wine Oscars” - as these prizes are known for - will take place this Friday, in Porto, at the noble room of the Alfândega Porto Congress Centre. The ceremony, organized annually by Revista de Vinhos, aims to celebrate and award the commitment to excellence of the national wine-growing and gastronomy sector.

Considered by many to be “THE MOST BEAUTIFUL RACE IN THE WORLD” the 12th Douro Valley half marathon is set for May 28. “Running along the banks of the Douro River, this fascinating race is set in the heart of the Douro, the oldest appellation, or legally protected wine-growing region in the world, a world heritage.”

“In 2016 there were 30,000 participants from 30 countries, and this event is not just about running; the Douro will welcome the participants with a wide variety of activities, giving the thousands of participants from all around the world the opportunity to enjoy to the fullest the unequalled beauty of this region”.

This is a unique opportunity to add the pleasure of experiencing the Douro Valley to the pleasure of running. Here, visitors will have the opportunity of spending some relaxing days at estates that produce the Douro and Port wines and benefitting from some of the best wine-tourism programmes the Douro has to offer.

They will have the opportunity to taste the wines of the region (both red and whites) and get to know the autochthonous varieties of the Douro: the reds—Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca, Tinta Roriz (Aragonez), Tinta Barroca and Tinto Cão; and the whites—Malvasia (Malmsey) Fina, Viosinho, Gouveio and Rabigato.

As for Port Wine, this will be an opportunity to learn more about the most exclusive wine in the world, made here in the Douro, the unique characteristics of which set it apart from all the others.

But the experiences in the Douro region are not limited to the wines. The cuisine of the region is one of the richest of Portugal and all who visit the Douro must try young goat (Kid), posta Mirandesa, wild boar, partridge, and the feijoada (bean stew), among others.

“Running in the Douro Valley is much more than pounding the asphalt; it is feeling the pure emotion that conquers the heart step by step.”
