Done! Marie and Julia Wasem are relieved! The 2023 harvest in the family winery was not easy. But now the grape must from over 20 hectares of vines is fermenting in stainless steel tanks and wooden barrels! Thanks to careful, selective harvesting, it will certainly be a good wine. The hustle and bustle and the smells of the grape harvest, which cover Rheinhessen like a harvest veil, are also felt by the guests in both houses of the wine hotel. The main house is part of the courtyard of the Wasem Doppelstück winery. The historic ensemble makes you think of holiday at the vineyard. Guests have been able to stay here since 2002 in the 2018 lovingly restored family hotel situated in the centre of Ingelheim.

2019: The new beginning! Supported by their parents, Burkhard and Ilona, as well as grandma Magda, the sisters founded the Wasem Doppelstück company. The two were only 20 and 24 years old at the time  – quite courageous!

A functioning division of labour: Marie, the older one, is responsible for the business management and sales. Julia, who studied oenologist, is the winemaker. They are determined to formulate clear common goals: They focus on “quality, femininity, craftsmanship and sustainability”. The careful use of nature’s resources is a matter close to Julia’s heart – in 2022 the motto was: “We are organic!” The conversion to organic viticulture was already completed after three years. The focus of the wines is on Burgundy varieties. The sites around Ingelheim are particularly suitable for Pinot Noir. The red wines from this grape variety are also of select quality at the Wasem Doppelstück winery. In addition to Riesling, the eye-catching label with the large W is affixed above all to bottles of Pinot Gris, Pinot Blanc, Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay.

The new-design hotel extension, just a few houses away from the winery, plays on the wine theme in a modern way: There are wine labels with the room numbers on it. And in the rooms, wooden panelling made from original red wine barrels create a homely atmosphere. Individually made furniture guarantees a high feel-good factor. Wooden benches in the garden invite to relax. Mother Ilona looks after the wine hotel. And grandma Magda bakes homemade cakes every day, which the hotel guests can enjoy as a greeting from the house.

A perfect venue

The triad of winery, wine hotel and event location is ideal for company seminars. And it can also be booked for private celebrations such as the increasingly popular bachelor parties. The vinotheque invites to a harmonious evening in a small group. For larger parties, rooms such as the barn or the event room are available – even with karaoke facilities. The “Doppelstück philosophy” in one sentence: “To make wine an experience for all age groups with a very young dynamic, to create an individual programme with beautiful moments with wine!”

The prize for the Great Wine Capitals Best of Wine Tourism Award 2023 in the category “Accommodation” goes to “Weingut Wasem Doppelstück und Weinhotel”.

The jury was enthusiastic about the sustainable combination of winery and wine hotel that offers guests a sustainable wine experience.
