Historical Christmas Market in Mainz
The historical Christmas Market around St. Martin’s Cathedral in Mainz creates a magical atmosphere with its 100 lovingly decorated and illuminated stands. A diverse programme of concerts, workshops and plays guarantees Christmas feeling. Handcraft lovers will be impressed by the artists' factory that serves all sorts of handmade pieces.

The guests are met at the mill's weir, bench, chair and flowers are carefully and romantically arranged underneath the small roof. A path winds down to the entrance of the former flour mill, a small door within allows the view into the grinding station. "You could bring the mill back to work, that wouldn't even be difficult", Eva Eppard says. The young woman runs one of the best restaurants of the region in the old mill. "Eppard in the 100 Guldennmühle" sets a unique pace in terms of regional cooking and sustainability – and won her a  ‘Best Of Wine Tourism’ award from the Great Wine Capitals for sustainability in 2017.

Federweißer stands in the centre of Mainz

Annually – in late summer / early autumn – pretty wooden huts open their window shutters in the centre of Mainz and offer „new wine“ – meaning Federweißer and red sweet cider. A variety of substantial traditional meals such as onion cake or bread and dipping supplement the wine enjoyment.

Mainz Wine Market 2017 – a review

At this year’s wine market– the biggest wine event of Mainz at the end of August and beginning of September – the South Australian member of the Great Wine Capitals Global Network Adelaide was a special guest at the Great Wine Capital wine village in the city park. The city of Mainz was proud to welcome the oldest "family-owned winery" of Australia – the Yalumba Winery in Angaston represented by Heather Fraser. Next to the romantic rose garden of the city park visitors of the wine fair could taste all sorts of South Australian wines from Yalumba. As a highlight of each wine weekend a blind tasting took place on both Sundays including wines from Rhinehessen and the Yalumba Winery. Surprisingly most wines were guessed correctly which could not least be explained by the great interest of participants in South Australian wines in general and specifically in Yalumba wines. Especially one thing will be kept in mind: The interesting talks about essential features of Australian wines and in particular the differences between German and Australian wines.

Westwind Weine / Hein Winery

Protection and preservation of cultural landscape – this is a core topic which the Hein winery has committed itself to. In order to transfer the sustainability of the vineyard to the winery, the wine house building was built under the aspects of sustainability in 2015: vacant vault cellars were integrated into the building, old staves were supplied for new usage as panelling. Beside several solar systems for generation of electricity also a wood chipping heating system with grapevine is run to take account of the sustainability character.

Westwind wines reside at and inside the tower of the newly built wine house of the Hein winery: This raises in a fresh green as the counterpart of the medieval living tower and the defense tower on the opposite side which has been guarding the entrance to the Zellertal in Wachenheim for more than 10 centuries. From each floor of the building a new facade of the cultural landscape can be admired while enjoying wines – culminating in a beautiful panorama view on the terrace which reaches down to the Zellertal.

Neus Winery

The winery including the appropriate building and park ensemble was newly enlivened since it has become property of the Mainz business family Schmitz in March 2013. The villa from the Gründerzeit was built in the years from 1881 to 1883 according to the neoclassical style and was classified as a highly modern farm building in those days.

Along the protected farm villa and the winery a generous and also protected park with an old tree population stretches which invites you to stroll along. The cautiously renovated rooms radiate a special valency. With intentionally used style elements it was possible to modernise the grand winery building appropriately and to create a tasteful ambience for wine presentations.

The newly designed wine house in which you can taste their own Burgundy wines also radiates timeless elegance. In 2016 it was awarded the architecture price wine by the Chamber of Architects Rhineland-Palatinate.

Wagner Winery

Together with their parents the „three Wagner brothers“ and their wives run the 300-year-old family business within the historical centre of Essenheim. Each family brings in their skills in the maximum way which creates a winetouristic world to experience.

Originally the six Wagners are an oenologist, historian, mineralogist, journalist, biologist and hotel manageress. They create the frame for their especially culturally coined winetouristic experience.

Whether with a cabaret stage or farm festivals, wine and crime readings or children’s events in the vineyard where the young generation takes care of its patrons vines – the Wagner winery lives wine culture.

Domhof Winery

Already honoured with the award in the category Architecture and landscapes in 2010 the winery again convinced with its application. The Baumann family has built sleeping facilities in the former bottle storage. 12 individually designed double rooms classified with 3 stars superior by the DeHoGa as well as endowed with  the seal of approval „tested accessibility“.

This last innovation makes it an oenotouristic all-round experience: celebration, meetings, wine enjoyment and overnighting – including an own geo-cache park with eight stations.

mundart Restaurant

In the old part of Nieder-Saulheim the restaurant is located in a protected homestead harmonically matching the historical structure of the village. Beatrix und Markus Hebestreit provide seats for 45 guests on to levels as well as an idyllic inner courtyard for 50 people.

The focus on wine is guaranteed by the 80 sparkling wine and wine positions, a third of which is changed every three months to offer maximum variety. The gastronomical offer is completed by German cuisine with French elements. The friendly service including great wine knowledge combined with upper class cuisine was the reason for the jury’s nomination.
