The Growing Presence of Swiss Wines in France

From 13 to 15 February 2023, Swiss Wine Promotion (SWP) presented a wide selection of Swiss wines in Paris (France). The national body for the promotion of Swiss wines attended, for the first time, the international Wine Paris & Vinexpo trade fair. Their presence in Paris also featured two events organised with the Swiss Embassy in France and Switzerland Tourism.

In 2021, France ranked second in the Swiss wine export market, with an export volume of 13.4%. The Hexagon, and especially its capital Paris, is a very large hub for the wine sector. Thus, SWP wishes to take advantage of the enthusiasm for Swiss wines by strengthening the visibility and awareness of these quality wines through their presence at Wine Paris & Vinexpo, one of the most important international trade fairs for wine and spirits professionals.

SWP’s first participation at the Wine Paris & Vinexpo was accompanied by seven wine growers and the association for the promotion of Chasselas, and presented more than fifty Swiss wines from a number of wine regions:

  • Cave des Amandiers
  • Domaine Jean-René Germanier SA
  • Domaines Rouvinez
  • Albert Mathier et Fils SA
  • Cave de la Côte
  • Vini & Distillati Angelo Delea SA
  • Caves du Château d’Auvernier

Together with its partners, the Swiss Embassy in France and Switzerland Tourism, SWP organised some side events for both the locals and the professionals. First of all, on Monday 13 February, SWP and Switzerland Tourism presented Switzerland during an afterwork event at Le Perchoir Porte de Versailles restaurant. The theme of the evening: Switzerland awakens your senses. During the event, more than a hundred people discovered Heidi’s country through tourism, gastronomy and wine.

“Suisse Perchée is a concept that allows Switzerland Tourism and its partners to surprise the people of the Ile-de-France region by offering them Swiss culinary delicacies and wines. The partnership with SWP naturally makes sense because Swiss wines have great potential to gain visibility across the French market” – Alexa Chessex, Director of Switzerland Tourism France.

On Wednesday 15 February, at his official Residence, Swiss Ambassador Roberto Balzaretti hosted  a masterclass led by Paolo Basso, ‘Best Sommelier in the World 2013’, as well as a tasting of more than thirty-five wines, including classic Chasselas vintages. Four wine estates (Schwarzenbach Weinbau, Domaine les Perrières, Domaine Grand ‘Cour and Paolo Basso Wine) joined the companies attending the Paris-Vinexpo Wine Fair for this event.

“Switzerland excels in the wine sector thanks to the variety of its vineyards, its renowned know-how and the uniqueness of its grape varieties. Swiss wines have great potential to appeal to wine enthusiasts in France” – Ambassador Roberto Balzaretti, Swiss Ambassador to France.

“As a whole, all the activities carried out in France underline the sheer diversity and excellence of Swiss wines to both the French-speaking and international public. In addition, our presence and these events create and strengthen links with our partners, such as the Swiss Embassy in France and Switzerland Tourism, in order to sustain our promotional actions”, says Nicolas Joss, Director of Swiss Wine Promotion.
