(Porto, November 7, 2016) – The Great Wine Capitals Global Network announced yesterday that it has accepted Verona’s application to join the Network, joining Adelaide | South Australia, Bilbao | Rioja, Bordeaux, Cape Town | Cape Winelands, Mainz | Rheinhessen, Mendoza, Porto, San Francisco | Napa Valley and Valparaiso | Casablanca Valley.

Monverde Wine Experience Hotel has been a long time affair of mine ever since I visited it for the first time, in 2016. Quite unsurprisingly, this stunning and picturesque wine hotel was the regional winner of the “Sustainable Wine Tourism Practices” category of the Best Of Wine Tourism 2018 awards, following on from winning the “Accommodation” category in 2017.

Porto and the Douro wine region have achieve more international recognition. The House of Sandeman Hostel & Suites unanimously won one of the 10 awards given by the international competition Best of Wine Tourism, held this year in Adelaide, Australia.

Cockburn's Port Cellars

The impressive Cockburn’s cellars are the largest in the old quarter of the city, holding 6,518 seasoned oak barrels full of maturing Port, plus the equivalent of a further 10,056 barrels in larger oak vats. This priceless stock is essential for the creation of great wines, especially the famous Special Reserve. Visitors will learn that even with modern technology, there will never be an alternative to the traditional slow ageing of fine Port in well-seasoned oak.
