The Tanks Tom Built – Church Road Winery
There is a set of concrete tanks under the ground at Church Road that no longer hold any wine. They were built to. For decades they did, and the man who filled them, Tom McDonald, is the reason most people who know anything about New Zealand wine know the name Hawke’s Bay at all. The tanks are still there. That, more than anything on the tasting list, is what makes this place worth the detour.
